H.M.S. Magicienne, 2nd Class Cruiser.

This is a finely detailed original antique print (chromolithograph) from c. 1890. The accompanying scan gives a general idea of the overall view but cannot show the fine detail of the print.

Historical Note - "HMS Magicienne was the lead ship of her class of two 16-gun, steam-powered second-class paddle frigates built for the Royal Navy in the 1850s. Commissioned in 1853 she played a small role in the Crimean War of 1854–1855 and was sold for scrap in 1866". Wikipedia.

Chromolithograph:- A lithographic print is produced by drawing an image onto a very fine grained, flat, stone slab or plate with oil, fat or wax. After chemical treatment an oil based ink is rolled over the stone surface where it is attracted to the image only. The stone plate is then pressed against paper to reproduce the drawn image. A chromolithograph is produced by repeating this process on a series of stone plates with different coloured inks. In this way a coloured image can be produced. Blog article - Buyers guide to antique prints.
