Antique Prints - Historical Events

Original Antique Prints.

In this section you will find engravings (wood cuts/wood engravings) illustrating scenes from around the world as they appeared in reports from nineteenth century newspapers like The London Illustrated News, The Sphere, The Graphic, The Illustrated Sporting And Dramatic News and so on. Wood engravings were the standard method of illustration in newspapers during the period until around 1890 when photography began to take over.

To find prints that are of interest please make use of the following features.

  • FILTER - Use the drop down menu (below, left) on the filter feature to narrow down what you are looking at. You can filter by subjects by country and also by various subjects including politics, wars, disasters, shows and exhibitions, royal visits and so on.
  • SEARCH - Use the search box (top right of each page) to find prints of specific events or place names, eg. 'Manchester' or 'Great Exhiition 1851'.
  • SORT - The sort feature drop down menu (below, right) will arrange prints in order for you, either alphabetically or with newly added items first etc.
ALL PRINTS ARE ORIGINAL AND FROM THE DATE SPECIFIED! - Measurements are very approximate. The vast majority of prints are full page which tends to be around 11.00 x 15.00 inches. For a larger, complete view of the whole print open the image in a new tab or window in your browser. You may occasionally see faint lines running through an image. This is because many of the images are formed from several wood blocks lying side by side. The faint lines are formed during printing by the slight gaps between these adjacent wood blocks. They are not folds or damage. Paper quality is much better than newsprint so that images can be sucessfully framed.
