Wood Engraving:- In simple terms a wood engraving is a picture printed from an image cut into the surface, end grain, of a block of boxwood. The artist carves material away leaving the design as raised relief. The block is then inked and pressed against paper to form the finished print. The technique was developed by a British engraver, Thomas Berwick, at the end of the eighteenth century. It was used to illustrate a number of periodicals during the nineteenth century including the The Penny Magazine, The London Illustrated News and The Graphic.
